Leicester Climb Out of Relegation Zone
Leicester City have escaped from the relegation zone (for now) after drawing 2-2 against Everton on Monday, 1 May.
Playing on home turf at King Power Stadium in Leicester, England, the Foxes initially looked to be in trouble when Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoreboard with a penalty shot in the 15th minute. Fortunately, the hosts retaliated seven minutes later with an equaliser from Caglar Soyuncu.
In the 33rd minute, striker Jamie Vardy hit a crossbar in order to double Leiciester’s lead. Team-mate James Maddison attempted to take the score up to 3-1, but he missed a crucial penalty shot.
In response, Alex Iwobi rescued a point for Everton in the 54th minute to bring the final score to 2-2.
“We missed a penalty for 3-1, but also in the first half we were second best for long periods,” Leicester coach Dean Smith said in a post-match interview. “We knew the result today would not define what happens. We came out of the bottom three, but there are still four games to go.”
Despite the draw, Leicester are no longer in the relegation zone: they’re sitting in 16th place with 30 points on the English Premier League rankings, while Everton remains in 19th place with 29 points – thus, a strong possibility for them to be relegated.
But with four games still to go, could Leicester find itself back in the relegation zone or could they continue to steer clear of it?
